Abstract

1479839 Coated products EASTMAN KODAK CO 28 Feb 1975 [1 March 1974 30 Aug !9741 8450/75 Heading B2E [Also in Division G2] A support is coated with a layer comprising an electrically conductive polymer containing a crosslinkable -OH or -CO- group cross linked with hydrolysed tetraethyl orthosilicate, the conductive layer having a surface resistivity or 1 x 10<SP>2</SP> or ohm/square or lower (measured as described) and an overcoat layer coated from an aqueous based coating composition. The coated support may be an electrophotographic material wherein the aqueous based overcoat layer comprises an insulating polymer containing a photoconductor. Alternatively, it may be a photographic material, the aqueous based layer being a silver halide emulsion layer. The aqueous based composition may be a solution or dispersion and non-aqueous solvents may be present. Preferred conductive polymers are those comprising at least 90% monomers of the formula where R is an alkyl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, e.g. methyl, ethyl, butyl, octyl or tectyl and R<SP>1</SP> is R or propionamido and A is an anion, e.g., Cl, Br, I, OH, HSO 4 or H 2 PO 4 . If R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl group the polymer units contain additional units containing the -CO- or -OH groups to be cross linked. Suitable comonomers are acrylamide, diacetone acrylamide, N-vinyl pyrrolidinone or N- methylolacrylamide. A particularly preferred polymer is poly[N-methyl-N-#-propionamide or -3, 5-methylene piperidinium chloride]. The conductive polymer is mixed with the hydrolysed tetraethyl orthosilicate and dried at up to 110‹C or higher from 1 minute to 24 hours to effect the cross linking. The weight ratio of conductive polymer to hydrolysed tetraethyl orthosilicate may be from 1:2 to 9:1. Suitable supports are glass, aluminium, copper, zinc, tin, cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate-butyrate, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene and paper, including paper coated with polyethylene or polypropylene. The coating may be applied by dip coating, brushing, rolling or spraying. The layer may also contain additives such as polymeric extenders, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol and clays, talcs and calcium carbonates and pigments such as barium sulphate or silica. Insulating overcoats may be of polyvinyl acetals such as polyvinyl butyral, vinyl acetate-crotonic acid copolymer, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl trifluoroacetate and polyvinyl heptafluorobutyrate. This layer may also contain pigments such as barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, silica, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
