Abstract

1478094 Mass spectrometers FINNIGAN CORP 28 Feb 1975 [28 Feb 1974] 8437/75 Heading H1D A mass spectrometer system detects sequentially selected ion fragments and means are provided to automatically adjust the sensitivity of the detection system so as to be appropriate to the ion being investigated. In Fig. 1 a quadrupole spectrometer 21 has a photomultiplier 23A and an amplifier 23B. For each ion there is a channel 25 sequentially brought into operation by a clock 31. The channel 25 is effective to adjust the power supply 22 of the quadrupole to pass the selected ion and to adjust the gain of the amplifier 23B (or of the photo-multiplier 23A by varying its dynode potentials) for the selected ion. The detection of the selected ion proceeds for a time determined by the clock at the end of which a sample and hold circuit supplies an output to a pen-recorder 13. The clock 31 then actuates another channel 25 and another ion is detected and so on.
