Abstract

1477134 Razor blade units GILLETTE CO 9 Oct 1974 [9 Oct 1973 19 [April 1974] 46987/73 'and 17363/74 Heading B4B A razor blade unit comprises an open rect: angular frame, at least one long side of which is constituted by a razor blade member 3 having a cutting edge 3A, and means compressively engaged within the frame to strain the ends of the frame apart. As shown in Fig. 2, a pair of frame members each having a blade member 3 and 4 are separated by a spacer 5 located at each end of the frames. The inner edge faces of the spacers are tapered for engagement with a correspondingly tapered metal wedge 7 e.g. of brass. The unit is assembled by placing the spacers between the two frames, partly inserting the wedge Fig. 5 (not shown), moving the wedge inwardly so that the tapered surfaces are in contact, then e.g. spot welding the frames to the spacers and, finally pressing the wedge further into the frames to thereby place the blades under tension; the total wedging taper may be formed in one end face only, the other end being square. The blade unit is then clamped between a platform member 1 and a cap 2 to form a cartridge unit. In modifications of the latter blade unit, both outer edges of the long sides of the frame may be sharpened, or the unit may have only a single blade to the ends of which blocks are secured to perform the function of the spacers 5. The blade assembly may also be made adjustable relative to the guard surface formed on the platform 1. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 10, two single blades 21, 22 are secured to spacers 23 having tapered surfaces such that the wedge 24, Fig. 8 is driven between the spacers in a direction parallel to the plane of the blades. In this embodiment the ends of the wedge are bent to form flanges (35) Fig. 12 (not shown) which enable the blade assembly to be secured in an integral metal pressing formed with a guard surface (30) Fig. 11 (not shown); the pressing together with the blade assembly form a disposable shaving unit.
