Abstract

1476929 Spreading a tow IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 8 Nov 1974 [22 Nov 1973] 54282/73 Headings DID and D1N An apparatus for spreading a tow of filaments comprises an input guide 10, a spreader device 13 having a curved profile when viewed in the direction of filament travel the curvature being such that the path length between the input guide and the spreader is substantially the same for all the filaments, and an output guide 12 to form the filaments into a tape-like configuration. The spreader 13 may be of roller configuration and may or may not rotate. The spreader may alternatively be mushroom shaped 14, spherical 15 or a curved bar 16, and may be hollow. The surface may be of P.T.F.E. The spreader can be used in an apparatus for producing a resin impregnated carbon fiber tow and is situated just after an oven which is preceded by a resin nozzle, Fig. 6 (not shown).
