Abstract
1476091 Matt coatings on polyesters LA CELLOPHANE 10 Jan 1975 [14 Jan 1974] 1161/75 Heading B2E A polyester support is given a matt surface by coating it with a composition comprising (a) a swelling agent (excluding volatile organic solvents) for the polyester, (b) at least one synthetic resin and (c) one or more finely divided inert inorganic substances, in a suitable solvent for (a) and (b), and (d) removing the solvent. The coated support is useful for accepting ink drawing or writing, or for photosensitive or diazo layers. The support may be a plate, sheath or tube or, preferably, a film of polyethylene terephthalate and may be transparent or translucent. Suitable swelling agents are di- or tri-chloroacetic acids, phenols or resorcinols, and the synthetic resin may be a polyester and/or a vinyl resin such as polyvinyl alcohol, optionally partially hydrolised polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate/choride copolymer, or polyvinyl butyral, formal or acetal. Inorganic compounds mentioned are TiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 and ZnO. The composition may also include certain specified cross-linkers or plasticisers and may be applied by air-bed or reverse-roll coating.
