Abstract
1475995 Centrifugal pumps SIMMS GROUP RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 5 July 1974 [13 July 1973] 33563/73 Heading F1C A submersible pump, e.g. for pumping fuel from tanks, is driven by an electric motor having its commutator 21, Fig. I, and brushes (not shown) normally submerged in fuel at a level 30. To maintain the fuel in the motor housing at the level 30, the pump inlet 26, Fig. 3, is extended vertically by a tube 29. Moreover, the outlet conduit (25), Fig. 4 (not shown) extends to a similar level and is connectible to a supply pipe. A pair of series-connected thermistors (39, 40), Fig. 5 (not shown) may be arranged in the motor housing, one above and one below the level 30, so that if the level should fall below level 30 the electrical potential between the thermistors alters and this is sensed by a Schmitt trigger (36) which then opens an electronic switch (34) to shut down the motor and thereby avoid the risk of igniting the air/fuel mixture in the motor casing.
