Abstract

1475258 Drilling or milling apparatus H KIRSCHNER and W MEYER 16 Oct 1975 [23 Oct 1974] 42513/75 Addition to 1458886 Heading ASR [Also in Division B3] Drilling or milling apparatus for treating living bone, especially for dentistry, comprises a hand-piece 1 enclosing a chamber 6 in which is mounted a drivable shaft 14, a tool 2 in the form of a drill or a milling cutter which, in use, is connected to the drivable shaft for rotation therewith, and a tube 3 for the supply of cooling liquid to the tool, the tool being provided with a channel 25 which extends longitudinally thereof to the cutting end of the tool and communicates with the exterior of the cutting end through passages formed therein, and the tube, when the apparatus is in use, passing through a resilient seal 24 disposed in the channel and conforming to the external periphery of the tube to effect a seal between the chamber and the portion of the channel between the seal and the cutting end of the tool, wherein the drivable shaft is hollow and is connected with a drive shaft 5 coaxial therewith by reduction gearing, the input side of which is coupled to the drive shaft and the output side of which is coupled to the drivable shaft, and wherein the tube passes through the drivable shaft and at the driven end thereof a portion of the tube is guided outwards from the axis of the drivable shaft. The reduction gearing comprises teeth 10 on drive shaft 5 cooperating with a large gear 11 connected to a smaller gear 13 by a shaft 12, the gear 13 driving a crown wheel 15 fixed to shaft 14. The bottom 34 of a groove 33 runs at an acute angle to axis 31, correspondng to an inclined portion 28 of tube 3, and then runs parallel to axis 31 corresponding to portion 29. Tube 3 has a portion 30 perpendicular to axis 31 and a portion 32 for connection to a coolant supply. The hand-piece may be dismantled into two parts along line 8 by means of screw thread 7 and the tube may be removed from the shaft 14, so that tool 2 may be replaced by tools not provided with channels.
