Abstract

1474875 Thermal insulation COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 5 Feb 1975 [8 Feb 1974] 4917/75 Heading F2X [Also in Division G6] A thermal protective system for the wall 3 of a vessel comprises a plurality of baffles 27, Fig. 2, immersed in a liquid 2 in the vessel, the baffles extending over the entire contour of the wall and so arranged that an inert gas is confined in spaces 32 against the wall of the vessel to form a substantially continuous gas barrier. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), each baffle comprises two tubular elements interconnected by narrow ducts, one element of each baffle containing the inert gas and forming a layer next to the vessel wall and the other elements containing liquid and forming an adjacent inner layer. In Fig. 4, baffles 43 are arranged as shown between parallel walls of a vessel and supported on shelves 49. Gas 47 is trapped in narrow upper parts of the baffles by liquid 48. The arrangements described are especially suitable for the vessels containing liquid sodium coolant forming part of a fast nuclear reactor.
