Abstract

1474131 Puncture sealing strips in pneumatic tyres GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 22 May 1974 22977/74 Heading B7C [Also in Division B5] A method of sealing a pneumatic tyre against punctures comprises attaching a sealing strip 10 to the inner liner 15 of the tyre 16 prior to vulcanization of the tyre, the sealing strip comprising one or more sealing composition layers 12 of soft, sticky, synthetic rubber containing plasticizer and encapsulated between covering sheets 11, 13 of vulcanizable or vulcanized rubber compound and optionally at least one separating sheet also of vulcanizable or vulcanized rubber compound located between adjacent sealing composition layers, said sealing layer(s) on the one hand and said covering sheet and separating sheet on the other hand employing different types of rubber having solubility characteristics sufficiently different so that at least after curing of the strip the plasticizer used in the sealing composition layer(s) does not substantially swell the rubber used on the covering sheets and in the separating sheet. The rubber of the sealing composition layer(s) may be a butyl rubber, polyisobutylene or an ethylene-propylene-diene monomer terpolymer, the exemplified plasticizer being a hydrocarbon oil and the composition optionally containing conventional rubber additives; alternatively, a copolymer of propylene oxide and allyl glycidyl ether plasticized with a polyether, e.g. a liquid propylene oxide polymer may be used. The separating sheet and the covering sheet(s) may be formed of polychloroprene or nitrile rubber optionally admixed with natural rubber or poly cis-isoprene, butyl rubber or chlorinated rubber, any may contain conventional rubber additives.
