Abstract

1473761 Measuring oxygen in molten metal ELECTRO-NITE NV 18 Feb 1975 [19 Feb 1974] 6816/75 Heading GIN A probe for measuring the oxygen activity and temperature of a bath of molten metal comprises a thermocouple 7, a first electrode 6 and a tube 8 with closed end, at least the end 9 comprising a solid electrolyte, the tube containing a second electrode 10, a powder of metal/metal oxide mixture contacting the second electrode and solid electrolyte, a refractory powder layer 12 and a duct 18 leading from inside the tube to atmosphere for removing gases generated during use. The refractory powder is preferably insulating and may be alumina. The duct is preferably of metal and has one end located in the refractory powder. The tube, thermocouple and first electrode are preferably disposed so that they enter the molten metal substantially simultaneously. The probe is mounted on refractory tube 1 and cardboard tube 2 which can be slidably mounted on a probe support rod 21.
