Abstract
1473397 Magnetic core components WESTTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 2 Sept 1974 [11 Sept 1973] 38266/74 Heading B3A A method of producing magnetic core components comprises severing microlaminations 42 from thin flat strips of ferrous alloys, annealing the microlaminations in decarburizing and deoxidizing atmospheres, applying a thin elastic insulating layer to the microlaminations, assembly a plurality of the microlaminations in a mould 30, aligning the microlaimnations into a desired orientation and pressing the aligned microlaminations to form the core component. The microlaminations are formed of iron alloy containing 0À05 to 0À15% C and are annealed in wet hydrogen having a dew point in excess of +120 F. and in dry hydrogen having a dew point of less than -40 F. to decarburize and deoxidize the laminations respectively. The annealed microlaminations are coated in a slurry containing magnesium methylate and then placed in a die or mould of predetermined configuration. They are aligned with a magnetic probe, Fig. 4 (not shown), and then pressed with a pressure of at least 50,000 p.s.i. A binder may be admixed with the laminations prior to pressing in the die and set either during or after pressing. The mould 30 includes an outer die member 32 and top and bottom punches 38, 36. A core bar 40 is used to provide the desired inside diameter of the ring core. Uniaxial pressure may be supplied via a double or single action press. Hydrostatic as well as isostatic pressing can be utilized.
