Abstract

1471719 Non-woven net fabric QUICK SERVICE TEXTILES INC 12 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 53722/74 Heading DIR A non-woven fabric comprises parallel "warp" threads 17 including selvage threads 17a, and parallel plastics "weft" filaments 16 which intersect the warp threads, e.g. at 90‹, and are joined to them at their points of intersection, the weft filaments being joined end on to the selvage threads 17a. As disclosed the joining is by autogeneous bonding. Preferably two selvage threads are fed through two grooves in a die and carried beneath an extrusion slit whose length is less than the distance between the selvage threads. A set of grooves transverse to the selvage thread containing grooves is moved past the slit and plastics material is extruded from the slit as each groove passes it to form a weft filament 16. The pressure applied to the plastics during extrusion forces it to expand towards the selvage threads and form end on joints. The remaining warp threads 17b are then laid across the still plastic weft filaments 16 and roller pressure is applied to ensure autogeneous bonding at the intersections. Heat or ultrasonic energy may be applied and the warp filaments preheated to supplement coherence produced by the plasticity of the extruded material. The material of the weft filaments may extend partially round the selvage, Fig. 11, or completely, Fig. 12. The material from adjacent weft filaments may coalesce to form a continuous coating (25, Fig. 10, not shown) along the length of each selvage thread. The weft filaments may be of round, rectangular triangular or U-shaped cross-section. They may be composed of a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or vinyl acetate, polyethylene, polystyrene and its copolymers with butadiene, polyacrylonitrile, acrylic resins, natural rubber, neoprene, polyamide, polyester, cellulose acetate, viscose, cupramonium cellulose, regenerated protein or a condensate of an aldehyde with phenol, melamine or urea. The warp threads may be selected from the materials specified for the weft or they may be of a non plastics material. The warp threads may be mono filament or multifilament yarns. The yarn may be twisted. All the warp threads, or alternate warp threads may be elastomeric and may be wrapped with a non elastomeric yarn.
