Abstract
147,131. Krupp Akt.-Ges., F. Nov. 13, 1915, [Convention date]. Ordnance, discharging by means external to breech mechanism.-Relates to firing-mechanism, for naval guns, of the kind in which the firing- circuit is completed by two contacts, one of which is stabilized by a gyroscope while the other moves with the ship, the contacts being caused to touch in advance of the instant when the ship is horizontal by a "time of lead" which is equal to the "firing delay" constant of the gun and projectile. The invention consists in apparatus for measuring the time of lead. The apparatus comprises a swinging platform A, on which the firing-device C is placed, and electric devices for recording on a rotating disk T the instants at which (i) the two contacts c<6>, c<7> of the firing- switch engage, and (ii) the platform is horizontal. The platform is rocked by means of a crank F engaging an arm E projecting from one of the trunnions of the platform. The crank is driven by a motor G rotating at constant speed. The recording apparatus comprises a disk T carried by the shaft g<2> of the motor G and a pair of sparking-points s<1> s<2> which can be adjusted radially across the disk. Electric connexions and contacts are so arranged that during each revolution of the crank-arm, sparks pass between the points s<1>, s<2> at instants corresponding to (i) one of the engaging positions of the contacts c‹, c' and (ii) one of the horizontal positions of the platform A. Each spark is produced by a condenser discharging through the primary circuit of a sparking-coil. By moving the points s<1>, s<2> step by step towards the centre of the disk a number of records are obtained. All the marks corresponding to the horizontal position of the platform will be on one radius, and the morks corresponding to the closing of the firing circuit approximately on another radius. From the angle between these two radii, the time of lead can be calculated. The crank-mechanism is mounted on a slide Z so that the amplitude of the roll of the platform A can be varied by adjusting the distance between the shaft of the crank F and the axis of rotation of the platform.
