Abstract

1471080 Welding by fusion BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 18 Aug 1975 [31 Aug 1974] 38163/74 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions G3 and H1] Electron beam apparatus (e.g. welding apparatus) comprises a ferromagnetic yoke having opposed poles 7, 8 on opposite sides of the beam and a pair of deflection coils on each pole, one coil of each pair, (e.g. coils (11a), (12a), Fig. 2, not shown) being connected in a series circuit and in a sense such that the voltage induced in one pair of coils by a collapsing deflection current in the other pair assists the rising deflection current in the first pair. The apparatus ensures sufficiently quick beam switching between two weld runs 3, 4 that the two advancing weld pools are maintained, and is achieved by the Fig. 3 circuit (not shown) including square wave generator (20), "divide by two" circuit (21), and combined buffer amplifier and reference control circuit (22). Power amplifiers (25), (26) operate in the constant current mode. Programmable variable voltage circuit (27) provides for divergent or convergent welds. The yoke may be two part toroidal cores (30), (31), Fig. 4 (not shown), with bifilar coils (34), (35). In either construction the coils may be formed from a twisted pair of Litz conductors. Sensing device (10) (Fig. 5, not shown) produces a signal proportional to the beam current which via comparator circuitry may be used to correct the current (see Division G3). The device (10) comprises a thin walled tube (50), Fig. 6 (not shown) containing a resistive element (not shown) spaced by a glass spacer and connected at one end to the outer end of the tube, and at the other to the outer terminal of coaxial socket (52). Housing (55) may be formed from a solid Al block, is connected by wire (56) to socket (52) and carries PTFE bush (54). Further sensing device (60) ensures automatic focusing, the width of the pulses in each device being compared. The current control and focus control may be combined in one system, two encoded signals being transmitted in multiplex form over a single optical link. Two runs of "stitch" welds, rather than continuous weld, may be obtained by frequency reduction of generator (20).
