Abstract

1470735 Automatic position control INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 18 June 1975 25871/75 Heading G3R In a system for positioning a transducer over a magnetic track on a recording disc, the transducer produces a data signal and a data-dependent position error signal. Each signal is passed through a respective variable gain amplifier, the gains of which are determined by the data signal, and multipliers are used to produce a servo error signal which is independent of the data signal. As shown in Fig. 2, three output connections a, b, c are made to a magneto-resistive transducer head 10 centred over a magnetic track. A differential amplifier 16 and low pass filter 20 produce a data signal D in response to outputs a and c, while a summing network, differential amplifier 18 and filter 22 combine all three outputs a, b and c to form a signal DS representing the product of the data signal and an error signal indicating departure of the head 10 from a central tracking position. Amplifiers 24, 26 have a common gain factor G, and the output of the amplifier 24 is squared in a multiplier 28 to form a signal G<SP>2</SP>D<SP>2</SP> which is maintained at a constant value K fed through a filter 30 to the gain inputs of the amplifiers 24, 26. A second multiplier 34 receives the outputs from the variable gain amplifiers 24, 26, and thus produces a signal G<SP>2</SP>D<SP>2</SP>S equal to KS and thus representing a data independent servo position error for use in centring the head. The multiplying circuits operate at high speed, while the effective division performed by the feedback gain control is done at a much lower speed.
