Abstract

1470262 Electric heating elements DORMAN SMITH SWITCHGEAR Ltd 13 June 1975 [16 Aug 1974] 36111/74 Heading H5H A bimetallic strip tripping element 18 for a thermally tripped circuit breaker is attached in heat conducting contact to a U-shaped heater element strip 16 disposed between and connected to two terminal blocks 11, there being two resistive shunts 22 connected between the terminal blocks shunting the heater element strip. A heater support plate 13 of insulating material is secured to the terminal blocks and has an aperture 15 through which the bight of the heater element strip passes. The shunts are made of a material whose temperature coefficient of resistance is less than that of the material of the heater element strip so that with higher currents the heater element strip carries a smaller proportion of the current and is so protected from damage. The heater element strip is made of copper and the shunts are made of nickel-chromium alloy. The heater element is supported by a support bracket 20 to which it is riveted by rivets which also serve to attach the bimetal strip.
