Abstract
1469930 Carbon filaments UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 11 Oct 1974 [18 Oct 1973] 48730/73 Heading C1A Carbon filaments are grown by a method which comprises decomposing an acetylene or a diolefin, preferably C 2 H 2 or 1 : 3-butadiene, by means of a catalyst, preferably cobalt, in the form of particles which are carried by an inert substrate, the decomposition being carried out at a temperature in the range from 675‹ to 775‹C and at an acetylene or diolefin pressure of 0À5 mm. Hg to 200 mm. Hg, the acetylene or diolefin being exothermically decomposable to give carbon under these conditions and the particles being permeable to carbon under the above conditions. The acetylene or diolefin may contain free chlorine, oxygen or hydrogen.
