Abstract

1469255 Lasers CARL ZEISS-STIFTUNG [trading as CARL ZEISS] 9 Aug 1974 35147/74 Heading H1C A tunable laser comprises a porro prism 1 and a reflector 5 which together form a resonator containing an active medium 6 and a Fabry- Perot etalon 7, tuning being effected by angular movement of the etalon about an axis inclined by 45 degrees to the ridge 20 of the prism. The radiation emitted by the active medium may be plane-polarized by Brewster end windows 20, 21. For a plane of polarization 14 parallel to the prism ridge 2, Fig. 2, the plane is rotated through 45 degrees by an optically active parallel plate 8 before the polarized radiation 15 passes into the etalon. For a plane of polarization 14 parallel to the axis of rotation of the etalon, Fig. 3, a similar plate 8 is used to rotate the plane through 45 degrees before the polarized radiation 15 passes to the prism. The plate 8 may alternatively be birefringent.
