Abstract

1469180 Tufting machines SINGER CO 17 Aug 1974 36310/74 Heading DIG [Also in Division H2] A yarn feed roller assembly allowing variation in pile height in a tufting machine comprises a plurality of hollow drive shafts 11, 12, 13 drivable at different speeds having feed rolls 18, 18' rotatably mounted thereon, corresponding rolls on the respective shafts being drivingly interconnected and being driven by a selected one of the shafts by energisation of an appropriate electromagnetic clutch 34, 36, 38 located between each roll and its associated shaft, the clutches being energised through respective slip rings 56 and brushes 68 supported by members 74 by a pattern control unit 70. The members 74 are substantially U shaped and formed of plastics and they have recesses which embrace the slip rings. A slot in each member engages a fixed bar and spring contacts 118 hold the members securely in place. A gear 128 disposed between adjacent rolls on each shaft is adapted to receive yarns not being used, these gears having toothed portions initially in mesh but locking to remain stationary on rotation of the rolls. There may be only two drive shafts provided.
