Abstract

1469049 Aerating liquids HOUDAILLE INDUSTRIES INC 8 April 1975 [15 April 1974] 14372/75 Heading B1C In a method of and apparatus for dissolving oxygen in a liquid, liquid is continually removed from a body thereof and circulated through external hydraulic circuitry in which the pressure of the liquid is raised and oxygen introduced thereto, the residence time of the pressurised oxygenated liquid in the circuitry being at least about five seconds, and the oxygenated liquid is then discharged into the body of liquid through a discharge nozzle in which it undergoes a pressure drop of approximately 5 to 12 psia. In an activated sludge process for treating liquid waste, liquid is withdrawn from a tank 12 to a pump 19 and part of the pump discharge is passed back to the suction side of the pump through an eductor 31 in which gaseous oxygen or oxygen rich gas is introduced to the liquid, the main discharge of the pump passing through line 17 to a liquid nozzle 15 for introduction into the body of liquid as a high velocity jet. Secondary liquid entrainment is caused by nozzles 26 shrouding the nozzles 15.
