Abstract
1468160 Hydrodesulphurization of heavy oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 9 April 1974 [5 Oct 1973] 46590/73 Heading C5E The catalytic hydrodesulphurization, without catalyst replenishment, of vanadium- and nickel-containing residual hydrocarbon oils is carried out under a water-vapour partial pressure of 0À5-30 bar in the presence of a catalyst having a total pore volume above 0À30 ml./g., and being either in the form of particles of which less than 10% of the total pore volume is in pores with a diameter above 100 nm and the specific average pore diameter (p) and specific average particle diameter (d) are such that when P H2 is the hydrogen partial pressure in bar, p is in nm and d is in mm or of agglomerates having more than 10% of their pore volume in pores of diameter above 100 nm and formed from such particles. The hydrodesulphurization can be carried out at 300-475 C. and a hydrogen partial pressure of 30-200 bar using a catalyst comprising Ni and/or Co together with Mo and/or W on an alumina or silica-alumina support. The water can be added in admixture with the liquid feed, as steam, or as a precursor such as an alcohol. The feed can be subjected to a preliminary hydrodemetallization using a catalyst comprising Ni+V on a silica carrier.
