Abstract

1468159 Radar BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 19 July 1974 [20 July 1973] 34637/73 Heading H4D In a train- or other vehicle-mounted radar speed measuring system there are included aerial means for directing a radio beam to the ground and for receiving waves reflected therefrom, means for producing an A.C. signal whose frequency band corresponds to the Doppler frequency band, and means for processing the A.C. signal to produce a speed measurement output. A high-pass filter is connected between the A.C. signal producing and processing means and is continuously adjusted via a control circuit in a feedback path from its output so that its cut-off frequency always substantially corresponds to the frequency of the component of the A.C. signal having the maximum amplitude. As shown in Fig. 1, the Doppler input is fed via a filter 1 to a zero crossing detector 2, which produces a rectangular pulse train. This is fed to a line driver 3, which is connected to indicating and counting equipment providing a speed measurement. Output from the detector 2 is also fed to a frequency to voltage converter 4, which may be of diode-transistor pump type, and which provides a control voltage V for the filter 1, via shaping circuits 5. The filter comprises an operational amplifier OA1, Fig. 2, and a matched pair of field effect transistors Q1, Q2 whose resistance is adjusted continuously by the control voltage V so that the cut-off frequency corresponds closely to the frequency of maximum amplitude. Hence, unwanted lower frequency components are largely eliminated.
