Abstract

1467266 Seaming AUTOMATED PACKAGING SYSTEMS Inc 25 Feb 1974 [28 Feb 1973] 8466/74 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] A container 53 formed on a web 12 is filled from shoot 51 at station 50, and is then closed by heat-sealing, the container being held at spaced locations on either side of the heater 62 by grippers 63a, 63b to isolate the seal from forces exerted by the remainder of the web. Web 12 is fed to station 50 by driven roller 16, pressure roller 17 being retractable to allow initial threading of the web. The web faces are separated by air from blower 54, the containers being finally opened at station 50 by bursts of high-pressure air to receive articles 52. A resiliently, non-stick, faced bar 64 then presses the container walls on to pointed or serrated gripper bars 63a, 63b mounted on blocks 175 adjacent slit 61 in guard 60. The guard 60 retracts against springs 183 until the container touches heater bar 62 whose edge 162 is covered by a non-stick plastics film 160. The sealed oil-filled container is then torn from web 12 along a preformed line of weakness as the entire sealing assembly of heaters 62, grippers 63a, 63b, bar 64, and pneumatic actuator 72 are pivoted about shaft 75 as a frame structure 80, 81, 82, 68. The grippers are not retracted until tearing is completed.
