Abstract
1467001 Centrifugal pumps SYKES PUMPS Ltd 28 Feb 1974 [6 March 1973] 10923/73 Heading F1C [Also in Division F2] A priming arrangement of a centrifugal pump having an inlet 16 and an outlet 23, comprises a primary chamber 10 communicating with the pump impeller chamber via entries (not shown) and having a port 17 communicating with a vacuum source, e.g. a vacuum pump, via a secondary chamber 19 which communicates with the vacuum source via ports 33, 34 and collects any liquid entrained with the air withdrawn from the primary chamber. A float actuated valve arrangement 25 comprises a valve 37, an atmospheric valve 38 and a disc 39 which is slidable along a shaft 36. Surges in the liquid in the chamber 10 operate the valve arrangement to temporarily close the port 17. Rising liquid in the chamber 10 opens valve 38 whereby the inflow of atmospheric air forces the disc 39 downwardly to close the port 17. The consequent atmospheric pressure built up in chamber 19 forces any liquid therein back in chamber 10 via valve 30 and passage 29. Alternatively, the liquid may be returned from the chamber 19 by briefly opening a manual atmospheric valve 35, a glass 31 allowing an operator to see the liquid level in the chamber 19. By fully depressing the valve 35 so that it closes associated port 34, the vacuum source becomes isolated and both chambers 10, 19 are subjected to atmospheric pressure whereby a suction entry may be unblocked by flushing back water in the system. Adjustment of the degree of compression of spring 44 causes the valve 35 to open at desired vacuum and control the pump output and match the liquid flow to the pump suction. The vacuum pump may be tested by fitting a gauge to orifice 48 and isolating the vacuum pump via the valve 35. The port 33 may be fitted with a liquid-inhibiting device such as a float or ball valve 49.
