Abstract

1467045 Removing volatiles from methacrylate polymers MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 5 Aug 1974 [15 Aug 1973 (2)] 34362/74 Heading BIB [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] Volatiles such as monomer, solvent, and byproducts, are removed from a bulk or solution polymerised methacrylate homo- or copolymer composition by blowing said composition at up to 20 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> and 210-270‹C through a narrow opening 6 at the upstream end of a screw extruder (see Fig. 2) which is provided with first and second volatiles venting sections 8 and 9. The first venting section 8 is at a pressure of 50 torr to atmospheric, and any residue of volatiles is removed in the second section 9 which is at a pressure of less than 50 torr and at 250-290‹C. The purified polymer is extruded by the screw from the downstream end 28 of the extruder.
