Abstract
1466951 Furnace shells ENGINEERED METAL PRODUCTS CO Inc 25 Feb 1974 8473/74 Heading F4B A furnace shell comprises a dish-shaped bottom section 22, Fig. 1, having a metal casing 28 and a refractory lining 30, a first generally ring-shaped wall section 24 removably mounted on top of the bottom section and a second ring-shaped wall section 26 removably mounted on top of the first, each wall section having a casing and refractory lining, and means on the easing for holding the refractory lining so that the lining can be installed before the wall section is mounted in place. The furnace may be for melting steel scrap, heat being provided by electrodes extending downwardly through the roof section which is not shown in Fig. 1, and the furnace is adapted to tilt on the rounded bottom portion 34. The middle wall section 24 flares outwardly and the top wall section 26 tapers inwardly so that the furnace has a barrel-like section bulging outwardly in the middle. The bottom section casing 22, Fig. 2, has an outwardly projecting flange at its upper edge to be engaged by the lower flange 50, Fig. 3, of the middle wall casing 24. The upper flange of this casing is similarly engaged by the lower flange 84, Fig. 4, of the top wall casing. The casings are located on each other by pins 52, 86 engaging in holes in the superposed casings. The joints between the refractory linings are sealed with fireclay. The metal easing 62 of the pouring spout is removable from the middle wall easing as shown in Fig. 3 being normally retained by flange bolts and locating pins in the top flanges 70. The middle wall section 24 has a stepped upper surface constituted by flanges 72, 80. By this means the joint between the middle and top wall sections is arranged always to be above the slag line 56 even when the furnace is tipped. Also the stepped construction facilitates insertion of the firebricks during installation of the linings in the two wall sections. When wear necessitates the shutting down of the furnace the worn wall sections 24, 26 are removed and spare ones are hoisted into place. The refractory linings are held in place on the wall sections when these are detached from the furnace bottom by ledges 90, Fig. 3 and 92, 94, Fig. 4. Opposite the pouring spout there is a slag discharge opening 100 formed by a sill 112 in the middle wall and an opening in the top wall, Fig. 4, lined by side members 104, 106 and a top member 108. The opening 100 can be closed by a sliding door 102. When the furnace is tilted backwardly slightly the slag pours out through the opening 100 and flows over a refractory apron 114, e.g. of graphite. The door 102 is carried in a water-cooled metal frame. Cooling water is also circulated through passages 120, 134 in the upper and lower flanges of the top wall casing. Similar passages may be formed in the middle wall casing.
