Abstract
1466874 Jet propulsion nozzles - variable geometry ROLLS ROYCE (1971) Ltd 15 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973] 55608/73 Heading F1J A gas turbine jet engine variable geometry propulsion nozzle comprises two sets of pivotallymounted flaps, the flaps 12 of one set being alternately disposed with the flaps 14 of the other set; the flaps 12 are of arcuate section and the flaps 14 are of chute-shape section. The arcuate flaps 12 each have two movable sealing flaps 12a, 12b which contact the chute-shape flaps 14 at each side of the arcuate flap. An actuating mechanism comprising an axially-movable ring member 20 carrying rollers 22 is provided, the rollers engaging cam members 16, 18 carried by the arcuate flaps and the chute flaps respectively. The cams 16 have a surface 16a which rises and a surface 16b which falls while the cams 18 have a surface 18a which corresponds to surface 16a of cam 16, and a surface 18b which continues to rise after a point of inflexion. The nozzle is movable between a maximum area position Fig. 1a for use with re-heat in operation, to a cruise position of smaller area but of circular form Fig. 1b, to a convoluted form Fig. 1c for use when noise reduction procedure is called for, the chute flaps being in their innermost positions, the rollers 22 engaging the portions 18b of the cams. The flaps are held outwardly against the cam rollers by gas-pressure within the nozzle.
