Abstract

1466698 Coating a paper web SCOTT PAPER CO 4 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 05035/ 74 Heading B2E A method of treating paper web comprises (I) applying to the surface of at least one side of the paper web an aqueous composition comprising paper coating pigment and a binder consisting essentially of a polymer latex, the polymer having a Tg value greater than 100‹F, (2) drying the coating at a coating temperature below Tg and (3) finishing the coating by hot calendering at a temperature above Tg e.g. by gloss or super calendering. In the examples internally sized paper having been primed with an aqueous coating composition of starch and clay is treated with an aqueous coating composition comprising pigment (e.g. clay) tetrasodium pyrophosphate and one of a polyvinylacetate emulsion, an acrylic polymer emulsion or a styrene-butadiene latex dried and gloss calendered.
