Abstract

1466165 Building tyres INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 25 April 1974 [26 April 1973] 18097/74 Heading B7C A tyre building apparatus includes a drum which comprises a pair of rotatable discs 2, 3 which are coaxial and movable axially relative to each other, each disc comprising bead core clamping means, e.g. a plurality of arcuate sectors 13 or 14 movable radially outwardly by admission of compressed air to spaces defined by membranes 17 or 18 and means, e.g. an annular inflatable bag 9 or 10, for effecting ply turnup, and means for admitting fluid under pressure into and exhausting said fluid from the space between the discs; means for applying the bead cores; means for applying a tread band or a breaker structure and tread band; and means for stitching the tread band or the breaker structure and tread band. As illustrated a telescopic device 23 or 24 extends between a central carcass ply support 21 and each disc. In operation, carcass plies T are applied to the drum with their ends extending outwardly beyond seats 15, 16. Beads cores C are positioned radially outwardly of the seats, and compressed air is admitted to the spaces defined by the membranes 17, 18 to cause the carcass plies to be clampled between the seats and the cores. Bead core applicators 19, 20 are removed, and compressed air is admitted into the space between the discs and the discs are simultaneously moved together. When the Fig. 2 position is reached the breaker Z and tread B are applied in a known way. Air is now admitted to the bags 9, 10 to effect the turn-up of the plies T, and the discs are moved to the position of Fig. 3. When the latter position is reached the air pressure within the carcass is increased from approx. 0À5 to 1À5 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> in order to enable the breaker and tread to be stitched to the carcass. If reinforcing strips are to be applied to the side-walls of the carcass, the bags 9, 10 are now deflated, the strips are wound around the bags, and the latter are reinflated.
