Abstract
1466054 Moulding abrasive products EDENVALE ENG WORKS (PTY) Ltd 6 March 1975 [7 March 1974 24 May 1974] 9437/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division B3] An abrasive product is produced by providing a mixture of abrasive particles at least some of which are needle-shaped, and starter ingredients for a bonding matrix, causing the mixture to flow, so causing the needle-shaped particles to orientate with their long axes substantially in the direction of flow, and causing the starter ingredients to set, at least partially. The process is preferably carried out in such a way as to align the needle-shaped particles (e.g. diamond, boron nitride) with their long axes substantially perpendicular to the working face of the product. The abrasive particles may be coated with metal, e.g. nickel. In one embodiment the mixture is extruded from a chamber 12, Fig. 1, through an arcuate passage 16 by a plunger 20 to form a segment of a cup grinding wheel. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the mixture in a chamber 30 is caused to flow through a right-angled bend 32 into a passage 34 to form a grinding wheel. In another similar embodiment, not shown, the passage 34 is connectible selectively to one of series of cavities for making grinding wheel rims. In another example the rim portion of a grinding wheel is moulded on to the hub of the wheel.
