Abstract

1465912 Foamable vinyl chloride polymer/ surfactant compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 July 1974 [19 July 1973] 34469/73 Heading C3C A foamable composition comprises a homo- or copolymer of vinyl chloride, a non-ionic surfactant and an anionic surfactant which is a salt of an organic acid and a mono- or dialkanolamine in which the salt is an alkylbenzene carboxylate, organosulphonate, an alkyl ether sulphate (a compound obtained by sulphating an alcohol of 10 to 14 carbon atoms, in which the alcohol has previously been reacted with one ethylene oxide unit per molecule) or organophosphate which preferably contains at least one carbon chain of 7-22 carbon atoms, a chain of 7-22 propylene oxide or higher alkylene oxide units, or the carbon chain forms the alkyl moiety of an alkyl benzene group (e.g. a pdodecylbenzene sulphonate). The organic acid may be a C 10-14 fatty acid. The non-ionic surfactant may be an alkoxylate (especially ethoxylate) of an alkylphenol wherein the alkoxylate preferably comprises 5-20 alkylene oxide units and the alkylphenol preferably comprises at least one alkyl group of C 5-15 (e.g. p-octylphenolethoxylate or p-nonylphenol ethoxylate containing 13-15 ethylene oxide units), or may be an alkoxylate of an alcohol, a fatty acid amide or an amine which are preferably saturated aliphatic compounds of 5-20 carbon atoms. The vinyl chloride polymer may be a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylacetate, acrylonitrile or vinylidene chloride. The composition may also comprise a plasticizer which may be a chlorinated paraffin, a butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer or an ester. Preferred esters are tricresylphosphate, or an ester of orthophthalic acid, sebacic acid or adipic acid with benzylalcohol or a C 4-14 alkanol or mixtures of C 4-14 alkanols (e.g. di-iso-octylphthalate, di(2-ethylhexylphthalate), the diester of o-phthalic acid with a mixture of C 7-9 alkanols, such a mixture being available under the Registered Trade Mark "ALPHANOL"). The compositions may contain up to 20% by weight of total surfactant, based on the weight of the composition, wherein the weight ratio of anionic to non-ionic surfactant is preferably 1 : 5 to 5 : 1 and preferably contain 20-60% by weight of plasticizer, based on the weight of the composition. In the examples, a p-nonylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate was added to a mixture of dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid and the diester of o-phthalic acid with a mixture of C 7-9 alcohols neutralized with (1), (2), (4) monoethanolamine; (3) n-propanolamine. The mixtures thus obtained were added to a mixture of polyvinylchloride, vinylchloride/- vinylacetate copolymer, limestone filler and a plasticizer mixture consisting of butyl benzylphthalate, a chlorinated paraffin and the diester of o-phthalic acid with a mixture of C 7-9 alcohols to yield foamable compositions. The wet foam, dry foam densities (g./ml.) of the products are (1) 0À49, 0À48; (2) 0À28, 0À28; (3) 0À30, 0À30; (4) 0À34, 0À35.
