Abstract

1465265 Starting prime movers LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 13 Feb 1974 [22 March 1973] 13783/73 Heading H2H A system for starting the engine of a vehicle is so arranged that restarting of the engine after an attempt has been made to start the engine is inhibited until the starter switch has been released from the starting position. A battery 16 of a vehicle is charged by an alternator 11 by way of a rectifier bridge 12, 13 and conductors 14, 15. A series circuit comprising a starter switch 19, contact 25 of a first relay and winding 26 of a second relay is connected across the battery 16 such that when the starter switch 19 is in the starting position 22, the winding 26 is energized to close contact 27 so energizing winding 28 of the starter relay to close contact 29 whereby to energize the starter motor 31. When the engine is running the alternator 11 produces an output on a conductor 18 by way of rectifier diodes 17 such that the conductors 18, 14 are at the same potential. Winding 34 of the first relay is thus energized sufficiently to change over the contact 25 whereupon winding 26, and hence winding 28 and the starter motor 31, are de-energized. The change over of the contact 25 also places the winding across the battery 16 so that it remains energized should the alternator 11 cease to provide an output. Thus to operate the starter motor again the switch 19 must be released from the starting position 22 in order that the system may revert to the normal condition. A warning lamp 24 is provided and a conventional regulator 33 for the alternator field winding 22. The winding 34 receives current via the lamp 24 during the initial stages of a starting operation but this energization is insufficient to cause operation of the first relay.
