Abstract

1465142 Distyryl amines EASTMAN KODAK CO 3 May 1974 [4 May 1973 19 Feb 1974] 19591/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division G2] A distyryl compound of formula is prepared by adding 4 di-p-tolylaminobenzaldehyde to a solution of tetraethyl 4,6-dimethyl-m-xylylenediphosphonate and sodium methoxide in dimethylformamide and separating the yellow compound formed. In general, compounds of formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> to R<SP>4</SP> are substituted or unsubstituted aryl or alkyl groups, Ar<SP>1</SP> and Ar<SP>3</SP> are substituted or unsubstituted phenylene groups and Ar<SP>2</SP> is a substituted or unsubstituted arylene group or a divalent heterocyclic aromatic group with a S atom as the only heteroatom are prepared by reacting a dialkylarylphosphonate with an appropriate aldehyde (e.g. p-diphenylaminobenzaldehyde or 4-di-p-tolylaminobenzaldehyde) in the presence of a strong base.
