1464860 Thermoplastic compositions D W SEAR 13 Feb 1974 [24 Feb 1973 16 April 1973 21 May 1973(2) 22 June 1973] 9163/73 18182/73 24104/73 24105/73 and 29684/73 Headings C3P and C3Q A thermoplastic composition comprises pieces of a non-thermoplastic rubber material bonded together by a thermoplastic resin binder, there being at least 50% by weight of the rubber material and at least 5% of the resin present in the composition and the binder and the rubber of the rubber material having solubility parameters which lie within one unit of one another when measured using the same type of solvent. Scrap rubber and scrap resin can be bonded together. In the examples mouldings are made from compositions in which whole tyre rubber crumb consisting of natural rubber and styrene butadiene rubber is bonded with an ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer alone or mixed with polyethylene or for comparison with a polyester or polyethylene alone; natural rubber from playball buffings is bonded with a styrenebutadiene block copolymer or for comparison with an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer; butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber is bonded with a polyester or an ABS resin or for comparison with an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer or polyethylene; or ethylene-propylene diene rubber is bonded with polyethylene and in some cases the composition also contains coumarone indene resin, naphthenic plasticizer and/or clay or silicate fillers.
