Abstract

Tanning-agents are prepared by sulphonating crude anthracene, crude carbazole, anthracene waste, or the like, by means of chlorsulphonic acid, preferably in the presence of an inert diluent, such as nitrobenzene, at a moderate temperature; the products may be subsequently treated with decolourizing agents as described in Specification 169,943. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the sulphonation of the above materials with sulphuric acid, and decolourizing the product by means of chlorine, hypochlorites, oxalic acid, formaldehyde, &c. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
