Abstract

1463026 Cupping STANDUN Inc 8 May 1975 [19 June 1974] 19300/75 Heading B3Q Tubular articles 46 are stripped from a moving ram 42 by fingers 78 urged into a pre-set maximum forward position, engagement by an irregular edge 48 of an article 46 causing individual rearward movement of the fingers until substantially all of the fingers have been contacted when movement of the fingers is stopped to effect stripping. After stopping the fingers they may be urged forwardly to assist stripping. As shown the stripper is applied to removing aluminium or tin-plate can bodies after redrawing and wall ironing. The fingers 78 are biased into the forward position by pistons 66 backed by springs 70 and by a constant volume of liquid from a closed reservoir 88. A piston 92 in the reservoir is backed by a spring 96 and/or gas (e.g. air) pressure. Liquid displaced by the different rearward movements of the finger pistons 66 returns to the reservoir 88 moving the reservoir piston 92 until it encounters a stop 98 which thus stops the finger pistons in their adjusted positions. As the piston 92 engages the stop 98, or immediately thereafter, a pulse of high-pressure air is directed against the piston to assist stripping. Liquid is supplied and leakage replenished automatically through a check valve 110; the liquid may be the water-oil emulsion used for the diepack. Stop mechanism.-An electrical probe 100 actuated by the piston 92 may emit a signal matched electronically against ram movement to indicate can length so that in the event of malfunction the machine may be immediately stopped. The same operation may be performed using a signal from a pressure detector 104. Lack of any signal, indicating a missing can, may be used to automatically stop the production line. In a modification, Fig. 12, spherical finger pistons 114 are secured to the fingers 112 and have seats 116.
