Abstract

1462963 Vehicles with special loads FULTON INDUSTRIES Inc 14 May 1974 [25 May 1973] 21168/74 Headings B7B B7D and B7H A three wheel aerial platform apparatus comprises a chassis 15 including a pair of parallel and planar uprights 16, 17, a wheel 11, 12 supported on the outside of each upright and a single steerable wheel 13 at the rear, a boom 20 pivoted on and between the uprights for vertical swinging movement with a workman's platform 25 at its free end. As shown in Fig. 1, the boom 20 has a fly section 22 telescopically received within the base section 21, the section 22 being extended by a hydraulic cylinder (not shown). The platform 25 is connected via a horizontal pivot 24A to the forward end of fly section 22 of the boom. Controls 26 on the platform 25 may raise and lower the boom, cause movement of the vehicle in either direction and cause steering movement of the single rear wheel 13. The boom 20 is raised and lowered by a lift cylinder 27, and a levelling cylinder 28 connected to a slave levelling cylinder (not shown) is pivotally connected to the rear of the boom 20 to effect rotation of platform 25 and maintain it level in any position of the boom. The single wheel 31, which is driven by a hydraulic motor 32 fed through pump lines 33, is supported by a fork 31 with a stub shaft 34 journalled in a solid metal slab 35, which also serves as a counterweight. A compartment 40 on the outside of plate 16 encloses an internal combustion engine 41 driving a hydraulic pump 42 which feeds the drive motor 32, lift cylinder 27 and also the controls 26 which include suitable valves. Compartment 45 on the outside of plate 17 contains a fuel tank 46 and a sump 47 for pump 42. In Fig. 3 a hydraulic motor 50 pivotally connected to chassis 15 has a piston rod 55 connected at its free end to sector gear 56 which is in mesh with a pinion 58 secured to stub shaft 34 of the single wheel 13 which is thereby steered from controls 26. As shown in Fig. 4 the wheels 11, 12 have an extensible axle construction in which support bars 68 of rectangular cross section which are offset from respective axles 66 and connected plates 67 of each axle assembly 65, are slidably received in upper and lower hollow box beams 60, 61 secured between the upright plates 16, 17 of the chassis 15. Therefore the distance between dual wheels 16, 17 may be varied and pins may lock the support bars in a selected position in box beams 60, 61.
