Abstract

1462801 Sawing apparatus; cutting by laser beam MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 7 Jan 1974 00603/74 Headings B5L and B4B [Also in Divisions B8 and C1] A method for obtaining at least two collections of sheets of different respective lengths by transversely severing a strip of the sheet material having faults at random locations therealong, comprises determining the length of each usable portion between adjacent faults, calculating the combination of numbers of sheet pieces of each of said lengths which gives a combined length closest to but shorter than the length of each usable portion, and severing each said usable portion into said calculated sheet lengths to remove said faults and minimize loss in the usable portion. As described a strip 10, Fig. 1, is conveyed past a measuring wheel 11 and fault detectors 13, 14 which together supply a signal to a computer 15 when a fault is detected in the strip. The computer thus determines the length of each usable portion of the strip and using sheet lengths preset into counters 17a, 17b, 17c then determines the combination of numbers of sheets of each preset length to minimize waste of the usable portion. The computer then causes a severing device 21 to cut the usable portion into the determined sheet lengths. The device 21 comprises a cutter, e.g. 22a, moved transversely of the strip by a carriage 23, which is carried by a frame 24 moved parallel with the strip and, during cutting, at the same speed thereas by an electrohydraulic pulse motor 20, so that the strip is severed right angularly. In the case where it is desired to cut a length from the strip less than the minimum length determined by the time taken for the severing device to carry out a cycle of cutting and return strokes, two severing devices may be provided, which are operable independently. The or each severing device may include plates for clamping against the strip during cutting, and the plates may be carried by boxes which enclose the cutting tools and are connected to dust extraction ducts. When the strip is of plastics or plywood the cutting devices may be rotary saws. For a glass strip diamond cutters are used. Alternative cutter means are water jets and laser beams.
