Abstract
1462782 Laminates ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 16 Jan 1974 [16 Jan 1973 14 Aug 1973] 13320/75 and 13321/75 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Laminates are prepared from a resin composition comprising (a) an aromatic resin having repeating units of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a divalent or trivalent aromatic hydrocarbyl or divalent or trivalent aromatic hydrocarbyloxy-aromatic hydrocarbyl, or inertly substituted derivatives thereof, and Ar is a residue formed by removal of 2 nuclear hydrogen atoms from a phenolic compound having 1-3 hydroxyl groups and at least 2 nuclear hydrogen atoms, and n is 0 or 1, (b) 0À5-100% by weight (based on the weight of the resin) of an inorganic dispersing agent having at least 1 dimension less than 100 mÁ and all dimensions less than 15 Á and stable to at least 150 C., and (c) a particulate material of particle size 0À2 Á- 2 mm. and stable to at least 150 C., e.g. a flame retardant, lubricant, metal powder or formaldehyde condensate with an amine compound. The compositions may be cured with hexamethylene tetramine, an epoxide or a formaldehyde condensate with a nitrogenous compound. In examples the resins (a) are those obtained from p-xylylene glycol dimethyl ether and phenol and from p-xylylene dimethyl ether and resorcinol; the inorganic dispersing agents (b) are fumed silica, an organic derivative of hydrous magnesium aluminium silicate and finely divided chrysotile asbestos; the particulate materials (c) are aluminium powder, antimony oxide, polytetrafluoroethylene powder and zinc borate; the compositions are cured with hexamethylene tetramine and an epoxide resin; the compositions also contain methyl ethyl ketone, decachlorbiphenyl and 2-ethyl- 4-methyl imidazole; some are used to impregnate glasscloth and asbestos cloth, the impregnated cloths being formed into laminates.
