Abstract

1462049 Particulate metal-containing material UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 9 May 1974 [18 May 1973] 23793/73 Headings C1A and C1N A process for the production of a particulate material containing a metal compound comprises forming a metal compound-containing gel precipitate by mixing a solution or sol, or a mixture thereof, of a metal compound or compounds with a soluble polymeric organic compound and contacting the mixture with a precipitating agent to precipitate the metal(s) of the solution or sol as an insoluble compound or compounds bound with the polymer in each particle of the precipitate; subjecting the precipitate in the presence of a liquid phase to a breaking-down and dispersion process to produce an intermediate product suitable for spray-drying; and spray-drying said intermediate product to form a particulate product. The process is particularly applicable to the production of particles containing metal oxides; if desired, such particles may be heated to drive off the polymer leaving substantially only the metal oxides, which may then be heated in a reducing atmosphere to produce particles of elemental metal.
