Abstract
1461509 Moulding catalyst carriers BATTELLE-INSTITUT EV 19 Feb 1974 7575/74 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions C1 and C7] In a process for the production of ceramic, ceramic-metallic or metallic catalyst carriers or catalyst systems having open pores, a compact mass of spherical bodies of approximately equal size is first formed, the bodies are then bonded to each other at their points of mutual contact to form a support which corresponds approximately in size and disposition to the desired macro-pores and the pore interconnections of the catalyst carrier or system being produced, the support is then filled by casting therein a suspension which has as a solid component a catalyst support material or a catalyst material, and, after the suspension has at least partially hardened, the support is disintegrated and removed without destroying the structure created by hardening. Preferably the bodies are bonded to each other by bringing the compact mass into contact with a liquid which has a dissolving action on the surfaces of the bodies, and thereafter removing the liquid from contact with the bodies so that a meniscus is formed at each of the points of contact between the bodies, subsequent evaporation of the menisci joining the bodies. The bodies forming the support may comprise soluble or low melting point salts, plastic materials, waves, metals or alloys. The suspension can be a castable ceramic composition. vitreous ceramic or a glass or cement like material or an oxide nitride, silicide or boride. A metal acting as the catalyst, e.g. nickel can be added to the suspension. The process is exemplified by using polystyrene spheres as a support material and alumina as the suspension.
