Abstract
146,149. Lanino, P. G. June 24, 1919, [Convention date]. Hauling by straight-line contact of ropes, with endless gripping chains; brakes for ropes; rope grips.-Relates to rope brakes and hauling appliances of the kind in which the rope is gripped between endless chains. The chains 3 are provided with wooden or metal blocks which have grooves for receiving the rope and can be displaced transversely to the chain. The blocks pass between slippers 4 which are drawn together by springs 5 and kept in position by bars 6. The connexion between the slippers and bars is such that each slipper can move slightly transversely and longitudinally to the bars. At the ends of the bars are pivotally mounted plates 9 having a series of holes 11' .. and a part 8 which comes into contact with the adjacent slipper if the plate is turned to the left. A pair of rods hinged to a post A are pivotally attached to the plates 9 by means of one of each series of holes 11'. When a load P, Fig. 2, is lowered by paying out the rope 1, the initial movement of the braking device with the rope will cause the plates 9 to be rocked and the consequent movement of the slippers will apply the brake blocks to the rope. The shaft of one of the sprockets 13 around which each chain passes is connected by worm gearing to a shaft having a crank handle 17 and carrying the elements 19 of a disk brake 20. In a modification, for use when the braking-device is lowered with the load along a fixed rope, a roller chain is placed between the slippers and the blocks.
