Abstract
1461070 Desulphurizing Claus off-gases SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 27 Feb 1974 [1 March 1973] 9931/73 Addition to 1356289 Heading C1A In a process for reducing the sulphur content of Claus off-gases by passing in admixture with H 2 and/or CO over a sulphided metal catalyst at >175‹C., and. then passing into a liquid, regenerable H 2 S absorbent, the H 2 S content of the spent absorbent is increased prior to its regeneration and the recovery of the H 2 S, by contacting it with a stream containing H 2 S at a higher partial pressure than that of the reduced Claus off-gases. In the figure, spent absorbent from absorption column 6 is passed through line 11 to a second absorption column (23) where its H 2 S content is increased by contact with an H 2 S feed stream (24). The H 2 S enriched absorbent is passed via line 26 to the desorption column (13) for regeneration, the H 2 S liberated passing via line 17 to a cooler (18) (to condense all the water vapour present) and from thence to a Claus plant (20). The regenerated absorbent is passed via line 15 through a heat exchanger (12), a cooler (16) and is then divided at A between two streams (15 and 22) going respectively to the absorption columns 6 and 23. The reduction of the Claus off-gases occurs in reactor 3, in the embodiment figured, at 225‹ C. The hydrogen required for this reduction can be supplied to the catalyst bed separately or may be added direct to the Claus off-gases in the line 1. After passing through heat exchanger 5 the cooled reduced Claus off-gases enter absorption column 6 where H 2 S is absorbed.
