Abstract

1460445 Block copolymer dispersions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 May 1974 [2 Feb 1973] 5239/73 Heading C3P A dispersion of particles of a block copolymer in a non-aqueous organic diluent, wherein the copolymer contains at least one cross-linked B block insoluble in the diluent and at least one terminal A block soluble in the diluent, the soluble A blocks being elastomeric and being present in sufficient amount to ensure the production of a stable dispersion but avoid flocculation. The dispersion is obtainable by means of a monofunctional anionic initiated sequential polymerization. Preformed "living" or "dead" block copolymers of analogous structure may also be present as further stabilizers, e.g. isoprene-b-styrene-co-divinyl benzene. Suitable combinations of monomers and diluent referred to are isoprene/styrene or methyl methacrylate, together with cross-linking monomer/n-heptane and isoprene/acrylonitrile, together with cross-linking monomer/ benzene. The examples refer to the production of a isoprene-b-styrene-b-styrene-co-divinyl benzene copolymer dispersion in n-heptane.
