Abstract

1460014 Automatic control of fuel supply in IC engines CAV Ltd 18 Dec 1973 [6 Jan 1973] 891/73 Heading G3N The control system for the fuel supply of an engine similar to that shown in Specification 1416861 is modified by'providing discrete changes in the fuel quantity/speed characteristic, as the engine speed reduces. When the speed is below a first speed the characteristic curve is made shallower, then below a second speed, lower than the first, it is made shallower again but below a lowest speed the curve is steepened. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, three controls 36, 37, 38 are provided in the feedback path from speed sensor 16 which become operative progressively in the regions C, B and A respectively of the characteristic shown in Fig. 5. In region D none of the controls is operative and the characteristic is obtained from a comparison of the signals produced by pump position transducer 25, demand transducer 33 and speed transducer 16. In operation the control 36 which is a switching transistor effectively increases the amount of current drawn from the inverting input terminal of amplifier 18 in region C and control 37 increases the current drain further when both controls 36 and 37 operate together in region B. When control 38 also is switched in the current drain is reduced to give the steeper curve shown in region A. Regions A and B are in the idling region of the engine and the increased slope in region A is stated to reduce the speed change when load is applied, e.g. by engagement of an automatic transmission.
