1460010 Wickerwork; wickerwork furniture WICKER WORKS 18 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 58484/73 Headings A4G and A4H [Also in Division D1] A method of forming a portion of a woven piece of furniture, e.g. a chair, having a braided periphery 32, Fig. 14, integral with the warp of the weave 28 and extending generally transversely thereto comprises, (a) forming the warp of the weave by mounting the ends of a plurality of flexible strands 30, Fig. 2, so that they extend in spaced, parallel, coplanar relationship, (b) weaving a plurality of flexible strands on alternate sides of the strands 30 to form a weave 28 extending partially along the strands 30, (c) bending a first warp strand portion 36a, Fig. 5 toward the weave 28, (d) positioning a support strand 42 adjacent the first warp strand portion 36a, (e) bending the portion 36a together with the strand 42 on alternate sides of subsequent warp strands 37, 38 or groups thereof (f) bending a second one of the warp strands 37 across the first bent warp strand 36a and on alternate sides of subsequent warp strands 38 or groups thereof (g) repeating step (f) with third and subsequent warp strands to form an integral braided periphery 32, Fig. 14, and severing projecting warp portions. Each warp portion is of such a length as to define an S-shaped curve in the braided periphery. The braided periphery may include one or more support strands which may be arranged in pairs, e.g. 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44 in Fig. 5, and are bent in parallel with the warp strands. In order to change the direction of the peripheral braid e.g. to form a longitudinal portion 33, Fig. 14, strands 60 to 66 are mounted in parallel in a frame member 21 of the furniture and these strands are used in forming the braid in the same ways as the warp strands 30.
