Abstract

1459759 Labelling apparatus R A JONES & CO Inc 18 Dec 1973 [18 Dec 1972] 58637/73 Heading B8F In labelling apparatus in which an applicator roll 5 applies a heat-softenable adhesive to a label web 60 having labels L partially cut therefrom and a reciprocable plunger 35 presses a label from the web and through an aperture in a support plate 32 on to an article T, such as a bottle, the web is intermittently clamped against the support plate in timed relationship with plunger movement by a clamp 11 which engages the adhesive side of the web and which is heated to prevent the build-up of adhesive thereon. The clamp comprises a reciprocable plate 20 having an aperture 21 through which the plunger may pass and over which an electrically heated resistance element 25 is secured Fig. 3 (not shown). The element presents heated fingers 24, the tips of which follow the contour of the label to be applied and project out the plane of the element to press the web portion surrounding the label against the support plate. The fingers are maintained at the temperature at which the adhesive is applied to the web i.e. in the range of 300-340‹ F. An endless flexible band 42 is secured to the support plate and is urged by air jets 41 against the label web to minimize web tensions induced by the change from continuous web motion past the applicator roll to intermittent motion past the label-applying plunger. The labels are partially cut from the web except for small rupturable junctions and may be arranged in spaced or contiguous relationship in the web, Figs. 5-7 (not shown). The applicator is provided with spaced pockets 52 to apply the adhesive to the labels arranged in spaced relationship in the web, said adhesive also extending over the label boundaries on to the web remnant. Alternatively, the adhesive may be applied over the whole of the web or in the form of two lengthwise-extending strips. In the latter case, the heater element fingers need not extend completely around the label periphery, Fig. 8 (not shown).
