Abstract

1458115 Equalizing tension in ropes ODES POLITEKHNICHE INST 25 April 1974 18061/74 Heading B8B A pulley block which is mounted on a jib crane comprises a pair of ropes 4, 5 attached to respective winch drums 11, 12, the ropes 4, 5 passing about respective pulleys 1 which carry a load-supporting hoisting member 2, and are attached at their ends to the crane structure 9, the pulley block further comprising means for equalizing the tensions in the ropes 4, 5, said means comprising a pair of pulleys 6 about which the ropes respectively pass, the pulleys 6 being mounted on a frame 7 movable in guides 8 fixed on the crane structure 9, buffer stops in the form of springs 10 being provided with a clearance # between the ends of the frame 7 and the ends of the guides 8. Under normal conditions a load is lifted or lowered by the drums 11, 12 which wind or unwind the ropes 4, 5, the tensions of the ropes 4, 5 being equalized by the translatory motion of the frame 7 and pulleys 6 within the clearances #. Should one of the ropes, e.g. rope 4, snap the pair of pulleys 1 and hoisting member 2 begin to fall, causing the frame 7 to move leftwards in Fig. 1 thereby contracting the relevant spring 10 which is compressed to thereby smoothly decelerate the movement of the frame 7 until the latter is stationary. The ropes 4, 5 also pass about a respective fixed pulley 13, 14 mounted on the crane structure 9. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) the tension equalizing means comprises a pair of rollers (24) about which ropes (20, 21) are respectively entrained, the rollers (24) being rigidly interconnected so that their surfaces define a cylinder (25) which is threadedly mounted on a screw (22) which acts as a guide, buffer stops (26) which each consist of a fixed and movable plate (27, 28) with a spring (29) therebetween being provided towards the end of the screw (22) at a respective clearance (#) from the cylinder (25), and as the tensions of the ropes (20, 21) are being equalized the cylinder (25) moves along the screw (22) within the clearances (#). In this particular embodiment the pulley block is mounted on an overhead crane, but both the pulley blocks described may be used with hoisting devices other than cranes.
