Abstract
1458187 Testing flour RANKS HOVIS McDOUGALL Ltd 28 Nov 1973 [14 Sept 1972] 42689/72 Heading A2Q [Also in Divisions Bl G1 and G2] The quality of cereal flour is monitored in apparatus comprising means for preparing a slurry of flour and water, means for introducing the slurry into an optical test cell 24 and means 37 for optically inspecting the slurry through the base of cell 24. In the apparatus of Fig. 1, flour falls down chute 1 on to a vibrating tray 2 from which it passes to the bin 4 of a balance 5 which automatically tips the bin, when it contains the correct weight of flour, on to a further vibrating tray 22 whence it passes to a mixing tank 14 in which a metered volume of water from tank 10 is stirred by paddles 17, 18. After mixing, the slurry is tipped into the test cell 24 which is moved to the optical inspection apparatus 37 in which a photocell 39 compares light reflected from the slurry with that from a standard surface. The operating cycle is automatic and includes washing of the mixing tank 14 and the cell 24.
