Abstract

1457920 Green feedstuff production method O RUTHNER 23 May 1974 23207/74 Heading A1E A method for producing green feedstuff consists of preparing layers of seed 18 mashed with water and placed on a carrier material 19 penetrable by roots, and a grid 20, between root impenetrable sheets 21. The layers are then placed in a first germinating environment 1 in which a root fleece develops and later, after removal of the sheets 21, the root fleeces are placed in a second growing environment 2 in which a green feedstuff fleece develops. A production plant for carrying out the method comprises a hopper 13 which delivers seed to a station 17 where stacks 23 of layered seeds are prepared. The stacks are transported to an endless conveyor 3 which moves through a chamber 1 in which the first environment is maintained. During the germination period the stacks pass through a nutrient solution 25. From the chamber 1 the stacks proceed to a station 11 where the sheets 21 are removed and returned to station 17 and the root fleeces 27 are placed on an endless conveyor 4 which moves them through a chamber 2, in which the second environment is maintained, to a station 12 where the green feedstuff fleece is removed from the grids 20 which are returned to station 17, and stored in a silo 14 for future dispatch to feed pens 15. The layers may be vented of gas formed in chamber 1 by tilting in the nutrient solution or by flooding the layers.
